PYRANTEL PAMOATE

As with all medications, it is extremely important that this medication be used ONLY for the pet for which it is prescribed.

 

BRAND NAME: PYR-A-PAM®

HOW THIS MEDICATION IS USED

Pyrantel pamoate is a safe parasiticide.  It is used to kill 2 types of roundworms (ascarids) and 2 types of hookworms in dogs, and 1 type of hookworm and 1 type of roundworm in cats.  This medication only kills these parasites if they are in the intestinal tract.

SIDE EFFECTS

Side effects of pyrantel pamoate are very rare but may include vomiting, and in excessive overdose, increased respiratory rate (breathe faster) or panting, fever, staggering, and loss of balance.

INTERACTIONS WITH OTHER DRUGS

Be aware that the safety of pyrantel pamoate changes when it is combined with other deworming agents - it is often contraindicated in pregnancy, lactation and very young animals in combination.

Observe for adverse reaction if used with organophosphates (flea and tick products) or diethylcarbamazine (once a day heartworm preventative).

CONCERNS AND CAUTIONS

Pyrantel pamoate by itself is safe for use during pregnancy and lactation.  It is also safe for use in kittens and puppies over 2 weeks of age. 

Pyrantel pamoate is to be used with caution in debilitated pets.

This medication may be given with or without food.

Elimination of parasites must also include sanitation and prevention measures to ensure your pet does not become reinfected.
