MAXITROL

(For veterinary information only)

As with all medications, it is extremely important that this medication be used ONLY for the pet for which it is prescribed.

BRAND NAME:  MAXITROL®

HOW THIS MEDICATION IS USED

Maxitrol® is a combination of neomycin (antibiotic), polymyxin B sulphate (antibiotic), and dexamethasone (anti-inflammatory corticosteroid).

It is used to treat and prevent susceptible eye infections and to decrease inflammation.

SIDE EFFECTS

Eyes may sting for a few seconds when medication is first applied.

The corticosteroid component of the mixture may cause an elevation of intraocular pressure (IOP) with possible development of glaucoma, and delayed wound healing.

INTERACTIONS WITH OTHER DRUGS

When using multiple products in the eye, do not apply all at once or the first medications will be rinsed out before effective. Contact your veterinarian for the proper order and timing of medications being used.  In general, place drops in eye first, allowing at least 15 minutes before applying second drops or ointment.

CONCERNS AND CAUTIONS

Do not touch the tip of the bottle or tube to the eye or with your hands, as this will contaminate the medication.

Maxitrol® is NOT to be used if a corneal ulcer or injury is present, since it will not heal.

Maxitrol® is NOT to be used in kittens with a possible herpes virus infection (rhinotracheitis in the eye).

If the eye is not improving within 48 hours of treatment or it worsens, see your veterinarian immediately.

A component of Maxitrol® has been shown to cause birth defects in mice and rabbits following topical ophthalmic application, so it should therefore be used with caution in pregnant pets.

Keep all medicines out of the reach of children.
