S-ADENOSYLMETHIONINE
(For veterinary information only)
As with all medications, it is extremely important that this medication be used ONLY for the pet for which it is prescribed.
BRAND NAME: DENOSYL SD4®
HOW THIS MEDICATION IS USED
S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) is a dietary supplement used in pets with liver dysfunction. SAMe is essential to all cells and is particularly important in liver cells because of their central role in metabolism. Supplementation of SAMe has been shown to result in improvements in liver function. It increases glutathione levels in the liver, which is a potent antioxidant that protects hepatic cells from toxins and death. This helps to maintain and protect liver function. Denosyl SD4® is approved for use in both dogs and cats.
SIDE EFFECTS

CONCERNS AND CAUTIONS
Store in a cool dry place. Keep tablets in original blister pack until used since tablets absorb water readily making them less effective.
The tablet must be kept intact to prevent destruction by stomach acid. This means tablets cannot be split or crushed and mixed with food.
For optimal absorption, tablets should be given on an empty stomach, at least one hour before feeding, as the presence of food decreases the absorption of SAMe. However, if you find it difficult to administer tablets to your pet, Denosyl® SD4 tablets may be disguised in a small amount of food.
Numerous S-adenosylmethionine products for human use have recently become available in health food stores and pharmacies. However, due to a lack of standardization in the health food industry, the quality and consistency of these S-adenosylmethionine products cannot be guaranteed. In addition, Denosyl SD4® is the only formulation approved for veterinary use. For these reasons, we recommend that you do NOT substitute another brand for use in your pet.
Keep all medicines out of the reach of children.
